Justice for Daunte Wright

This is Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man who was pulled over for a minor traffic stop in Brooklyn Center, a suburb outside of Minneapolis, on Sunday, April 11, 2021. Seconds later, police officer Kim Potter fired her duty weapon at Daunte Wright at point-blank range, killing him.

She claimed she thought she was firing her taser, but let’s be clear: Daunte Wright's killing was NO mistake.

At the time of the shooting, Potter had served as a police officer for 26 years. In fact, when Daunte was BORN, she was 6 YEARS into her career. She has also served as police union president, department trainer AND defended questionable actions by officers before.

After 26 years as a police officer, you know your gun is on your dominant side and your taser is on your non-dominant side. You know the weight difference of the gun vs. the taser. You know the color of the gun vs. the taser.

This shooting CANNOT be justified!

This was an intentional and unacceptable use of force when a simple ticket would have sufficed, but police too often forget the realities of life when you’re Driving While Black.

Daunte Wright leaves behind his soon-to-be 2-year-old, Daunte Jr., who will now have to go through life without a father due to this officer’s actions!

The excessive use of force by police on Black men is a distressing trend we sadly continue to see today. This incident happened in Minneapolis, just 10 miles away from the courthouse where former police officer Derek Chauvin is on trial for the murder of George Floyd.

Daunte Wright, just like George Floyd and so many other Black men, should be alive today.

Ofc. Potter and her police chief have resigned, but that’s NOT enough. Daunte’s family deserves justice.

This officer MUST be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.
